Flip-Flops and Potential Foot Damage

Many people enjoy wearing flip-flops in the warmer months. It is simple to slip your feet into a pair of these type of shoes, but they may cause uncomfortable foot conditions. This is a result of an absent arch in the shoe, in addition to lack of cushioning in the heel area. This can lead to chronic heel pain, which is often known as plantar fasciitis. If the heel is not properly supported, calcium deposits can form, often resulting in heel spurs. The toes can become fatigued as they grasp the bottom of the flip-flop to maintain stability. Possible Causes of Foot Pain

If you have pain and discomfort on the outside of your foot, this is referred to as lateral foot pain. It may be difficult to stand and walk and can occur from a variety of reasons. These include inflammation of the tendons, pinched nerves, or stress fractures in the foot or ankle. Additional symptoms include tenderness and swelling in the affected area, and it may be common for ankle sprains to occur. Other types of foot pain can come from cuboid syndrome, bunions, and arthritis. If the cuboid bone becomes dislocated, the inflammation that develops will cause a condition that is known as cuboid syndrome. Bunions can be quite painful as weight is put on a portion of the foot to compensate for the protrusion on the side of the big toe. Rheumatoid arthritis will typically affect joints in the ankle and can cause extreme pain. Corns and calluses are both forms of hardened skin that appear on the foot, but they are not the same condition. Neither condition is dangerous, but both can cause discomfort or irritation. Corns and calluses usually develop as a reaction to pressure or friction. Standing for long periods of time, sweating, and wearing ill-fitting shoes make one more prone to developing corns or calluses. Calluses and corns vary in where they are likely to appear and their shape. Calluses usually appear on the soles of the feet, while corns often occur on the non-weight bearing parts of the skin. Calluses can vary in shape, while corns are normally small, round, and defined. Corns are also more likely to be more painful than calluses. Possible Treatment of a Broken Toe

The bones that exist in the toes are fragile and small, and may easily break if a heavy object is dropped on them. Patients may realize their toe may be broken if it appears to be crooked, or if an open wound occurs after the injury happens. Additional symptoms may include pain, difficulty in moving the toe, and swelling. Mild relief may be found while elevating the foot, which may help to decrease swelling. It is suggested to keep the foot as still as possible, and this may be accomplished by resting the foot frequently during the day. Taping the injured toe to the toe next to it may provide stability while the healing process occurs. What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence.
